Closure of Places of Worship 28th March 2020 – this notice supersedes all previous statements

In light of the Prime Minister’s statement this evening that all places of worship are to close, the Archbishop has required that all churches and chaplaincies in the archdiocese remain closed, with immediate effect, until further notice. Private Masses, streamed live, can continue.

This means that our churches will no longer be open for private prayer as planned and we urge all our parishioners to follow the new requirements by staying at home except for the following reasons:

  • shopping for basic necessities, as infrequently as possible
  • one form of exercise a day – for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household;
  • any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person; and
  • travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.

The Prime Minister also announced that the Government is stopping all social events, including weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies, but excluding funerals and we will of course comply with these requirements.

We continue to pray for each other and to support each other in all the ways we can.
