Peace Actions for August

Anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 6th & 9th August. Whether the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki constituted a needless tragedy or a prudent military decision will always be debated. As Christians we pray that those who now wield the tools of Armageddon will remember the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for a long time to come.

Read the story of Maximilian Kolbe (14th August) and consider examples of courage and self-sacrifice.

August 27th is the Feast day of Saint Monica patron saint of domestic violence. For those who would like to get involved in working with the victims of domestic violence, or simply learn more….  the following websites are excellent starting points. http://www.womensaid.org.uk and http://www.womensaid.ie

Marie Curie Helper volunteers needed to provide support to terminally ill people and their families

Marie Curie Cancer Care is looking for people aged 18 or over who are interested in providing support to terminally ill people and their carers.  We’re looking for volunteers in Liverpool to become a Marie Curie Helper – someone who can spare a few hours each week (Mon-Fri) to visit people in their homes to offer a listening ear, emotional support and practical information. Volunteers also give families a chance to take a short break from their caring role so that they are able to take some time for themselves.  No previous experience is needed; training and ongoing support provided and travel expenses paid. For more information, phone 0845 305 2191 or email volunteering@mariecurie.org.uk or visit http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/helpervolunteer

St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe  14th August

“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” John 15:13.

The best modern-day example of submission to this noble ideal is Maximilian Kolbe. In 1941, Maximilian Kolbe was arrested by the German Gestapo and was eventually transferred to the prison at Auschwitz, where he carried on ministering to his fellow prisoners in secret. In order to discourage attempts to escape, the prison had a rule that for every escapee, ten other men would be put to death. In July of 1941, a man from Kolbe’s bunker disappeared. Ten men were chosen to be starved to death. One of those chosen, Franciszek Gajowniczek, was especially upset because he had a wife and family, and he had hoped to return to them someday. Father Kolbe volunteered to take his place. His offer was accepted. Maximilian Kolbe is honoured as the patron saint of drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, and the pro-life movement. Pope John Paul II called him “The patron saint of our difficult century.”
