Shrove Tuesday – 17th February

In many countries, the last day before Lent (called Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Carnival or Fasching) has become a last fling before the solemnity of Lent. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday was always the last chance to feast, and to use up all the foods in the house that weren’t allowed in Lent. So no food was wasted, families would eat up all the foods that wouldn’t last the forty days of Lent without going off. Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday, as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.

Ash Wednesday – 18th February

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. It’s a day of penitence to clean the soul before the Lent fast. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of soul searching and repentance. On this day we are reminded to change our ways and get our priorities straight. Lent is a season of hope and good intention. On this Ash Wednesday we go about our business wearing the sign of penitence and hope.

Ashes will be distributed at the 9.00am Mass only.

Stations of the Cross

During Lent we will be having the Stations of the Cross each Friday afternoon at 2.30pm followed by Divine Mercy devotions. Please try to come, All are very welcome.

Remember we are very fortunate that each morning we have the Rosary and Adoration after the 9.00am Mass or Service. Why not make it part of your Lenten promise to come as often as possible. Everyone is very welcome

Lent groups

We are offering eight opportunities each week to join a group to reflect on the gift of marriage and family life in the light of the scriptures and our own experience. Please consider joining one of these groups, as we need to hear everyone’s experience of family life, whatever it is. Please pick up a list of the groups and ring the office to say which one you will be attending.

Spanish Visitors

On Sunday March 22nd a group of 50 young people, aged 15-18, from the parish of Santa Maria la Major in Daimiel will  be joining us for the 10.00am Mass and some activities in the Parish Centre afterwards. They would love to meet some young people from our area, so please encourage any young people you know to come and join us on that day.

Homeless Packs   – “The SVP are distributing 10,000 Vinnie Packs containing cold weather essentials to the homeless this winter.
