The Sacred Heart of Jesus – 12th June

If you grew up in a typical Catholic home you might have fond memories of the religious imagery that was part and parcel of growing up a Catholic; statues, crucifixes, religious pictures, bottles of holy water, and most important of all a large picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In that painting, we see the heart of Jesus surrounded by a crown of thorns, behind which lay a burning fire of love. The imagery might seem odd to non-Catholics, but for Catholics, the symbol of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a powerful image of the love of God. The heart itself is the very core of a person. In the Gospels, when Jesus was challenged to summarise the law of God, he stressed loving God with all our heart and our neighbour as ourselves. The New Testament stressed love as the way to life, “God is Love,” wrote St. John; “and whoever abides in love abides in God and God in them” The Sacred Heart of Jesus, then, is meant to symbolise the love of God and to evoke love for God from us.

This year our annual Liverpool Archdiocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from 24 to 31 July. While it is not possible for everyone to accompany us you can join us in spirit by becoming an Associate member of the pilgrimage. All that is asked is that you recite the prayers on the leaflet provided during the pilgrimage. If you are able we would also be very grateful for any contribution you can make to the Assisted Fund, which goes to provide the many things necessary to make our Assisted Pilgrims’ journey and stay in Lourdes as comfortable as possible. If you would become an Associate contact the office and you will be given a prayer leaflet and your name entered on a blue card that will be taken to Lourdes along with any petitions and donations. The cards and petitions will be taken up during the offertory procession at the Pilgrimage Mass in the Grotto. During the pilgrimage our Priests will also offer Masses for Associates intentions.
