Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Although it’s often called ‘Mothers Day’ it has no connection with the American Festival of that name.

Most Sundays in the year churchgoers in England worship at their nearest parish or ‘daughter church’. Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit his or her ‘mother’ church, or the main church or cathedral of the area. Inevitably the return to the mother church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away, often as domestics, returned home with flowers and gifts for their mother.

So it is that on this day, children still acknowledge their mother with flowers and home made cards.

Congratulations to  Edward McDonagh & Ellen Mary Ward who were married in our church recently. We wish you every happiness in your future lives together.

WELCOME – We are delighted to welcome Lucy Nell Majda, Ava Dorothy Normile, Philip Edward Crook who were Baptised into our faith community last weekend.

Come and be forgiven

We started the Year of Mercy with a day-long Confessathon in Advent and we have the same opportunity now in Lent. On Saturday March 19th at Blessed Sacrament Church there will be Confessions and Exposition from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Our local priests will take turns to celebrate the Lord’s forgiveness with anyone who comes. This will replace the regular confessions in all our parishes that day.

Dementia Friends

March 12th-19th is the national week of prayer for people living with dementia and those who care for them. As part of the Archdiocese’s action plan to build dementia friendly communities, we will have our first Dementia Friends information session in the presbytery at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16th March. This will be the first of many and places will be limited: if you want to be in this first group please ring the parish office to book your place.
